About Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets are available in a wide variety of grades such as N42, N52 and N42SH. The grade is a good indicator of the strength of a magnet. In general, higher numbers correlate with a stronger magnet. It all starts with the letter "N", representing neodymium. The following number comes from an actual material property, the Maximum Energy Product of the magnet material, expressed in MGOe (Mega Gauss Oersteds). Neodymium magnets are available with a wide variety of coating and plating options.  It is important to protect neodymium magnets as they will oxidize quickly without a protective coating. Below is a list of platings that are offered by totalElement.  Nickel  Nickel is the most common coating that you'll find on permanent magnets available from totalElement as well as most magnets available in the marketplace. This coating is generally applied as a triple coating with copper in the middle (Nickel-Copper-Nickel). Most of our disc and cylinder magnets are labeled as axially magnetized because the magnetization direction is through the axis of the magnet. That means that the poles of the magnet will be on the large flat surfaces of cylinder and disc magnets rather than the rounded sides.   A rare earth magnet can be magnetized in several different directions. Neodymium magnets vary in shape, and each different shape has its own corresponding magnetization direction options.  Learn more about all the different magnetization direction options here.  

Most of our countersunk and self-adhesive magnets come in equally paired packs, enabling you to use them as attachments to other magnets if desired. The product detail page will specify whether the magnets come paired or not. For pairing with steel discs or other plates, the north/south orientation of the countersunk hole or adhesive tape is not an issue as both the north and south pole will be equally attracted to steel surfaces.
