Neodymium rare earth magnets (NdFeb) vary in shape and size, and the different shapes each have their own corresponding magnetization direction options.  All neodymium magnets have both a south and north pole as shown in the illustrations below. Neodymium magnets are available in a wide variety of grades such as N42, N52 and N42SH. The grade is a good indicator of the strength of a magnet. In general, higher numbers correlate with a stronger magnet. It all starts with the letter "N", representing neodymium. The following number comes from an actual material property, the Maximum Energy Product of the magnet material, expressed in MGOe (Mega Gauss Oersteds). Neodymium magnets are available with a wide variety of coating and plating options.  It is important to protect neodymium magnets as they will oxidize quickly without a protective coating. What does "axially magnetized" mean?

Most of our disc and cylinder magnets are labeled as axially magnetized because the magnetization direction is through the axis of the magnet. That means that the poles of the magnet will be on the large flat surfaces of cylinder and disc magnets rather than the rounded sides.   A rare earth magnet can be magnetized in several different directions.
