Are Neodymium Magnets Food Safe?

Short answer

Standard neodymium magnets aren’t designed for direct contact with food. Their nickel plating can wear or chip, nickel can leach into acidic foods, and the exposed magnet corrodes. Use magnets around food only when they’re sealed away: inside stainless steel, like our food-grade grate and rod magnets, or fully enclosed behind a food-safe surface such as sealed wood or food-grade plastic.

Keep a sealed, food-safe surface between any magnet and the food.

Safe and Unsafe Uses in the Kitchen

Fine

  • Knife racks with magnets inside the wood (see our knife holder guide)
  • Fridge magnets, recipe holders and spice tins where the magnet is outside the container
  • Cabinet and pantry door catches
  • Food-processing separators sealed in 316 stainless steel

Avoid

  • Bare or plated magnets touching food or drinks
  • Magnets in acidic or salty foods, even briefly
  • Magnets in the microwave, oven or dishwasher
  • Small magnets loose in food-prep areas, where one could end up in a dish

Why the Coating Matters

Coating What it’s for Direct food contact?
Nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni), our standard Corrosion protection in dry, indoor use No Can wear, chip and leach nickel
Epoxy Better moisture resistance No Not a food-contact coating
Plastic or Rubber Waterproofing, grip, scratch protection No Not certified for food contact
316 stainless steel housing (Grate and Rod Magnets) Removing metal from food and other product lines Yes Made for food processing

Our Grate and Rod Filter Magnets are built entirely from food-grade 316 stainless steel with seamless welds and a polished, sanitary finish. Food plants use them to pull steel fragments out of flour, sugar, spices and other products. Read how magnetic grate filters keep food safe.

Heat, Water and Cleaning

  • Ovens and grills: above 80 °C (176 °F), standard magnets lose strength for good. See demagnetizing.
  • Microwaves: never put magnets or anything containing them in a microwave. Metal can spark.
  • Dishwashers: hot water and detergent attack plating. Wipe magnetic items by hand instead.

Swallowed Magnets Are an Emergency

If anyone may have swallowed a magnet, especially more than one, get emergency medical care right away, even if there are no symptoms. Magnets can attract each other, or a piece of metal, through the intestines and cause serious injury. Keep magnets out of reach of children and away from food-prep areas.
